Students and teachers of Saina Institute of Medical Science (SIMS) held a sit-in-protest in front of the institute at Porompat in Imphal East on Sunday, condemning the mob violence that vandalised properties of the institute.

An infuriated mob comprising locals and relatives of the girl student of SIMS, who was allegedly kidnapped and raped by the institute’s MD Yumnam Surjitkumar, stormed the institute on Saturday (September 3) and destroyed institute properties and many documents related to the students.

Terming the mob violence as a “life's attempt to the students of the institute,” the students asked, who will take responsibility for the documents and properties that were destroyed.

Relatives of the victim tried to attack the institute bus on September 3, the students charged. The case is a personnel matter that is not related to the institute and the rest of the students, they said.

“The day when they went for elopement or so called kidnapped was Sunday and holiday, no one from the institute knew about their matter,” one of the student told reporters.

Pointing out that the institute has taken up steps against those teachers accused in the case by dismissing them from the institute, vice-principal Sushima of the institute told the media that they should solve their case personally.

“The mob vandalised properties of the institute like laptops and destroyed documents and certificates,” she said, claiming that the amount of Rs 1,30,000 that was kept for teacher’s salary disappeared.

Asking, “why did the police release those arrested people who were arrested for mob violence,” she said the authorities concerned should look into the matter and try not to ruin the career of SIMS students.
