Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed Lal Thanhawla as member of the Congress Working Committee with immediate effect.

The five-time chief minister of Mizoram was relieved from the responsibility of president, Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee, while Lalsawta has been appointed as the new president of the Mizoram PCC.

"Sonia Gandhi has appointed Dr. @LThanhawla as member of the Congress Working Committee and Shri Lalsawta as the President of @INCMizoram, with immediate effect," the Congress party said in a tweet.

Thanhawla took to Twitter to express his gratitude for his appointment as a member of the Congress Working Committee.

"I want to express my gratitude to Soniaji for having faith in me and accepting my service as a member of the Congress Working Committee. It is such a divine opportunity for me. And congratulations to Pu Lalsawta, our new Mizoram PCC president,"
