Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills re-imposes containment measures amid Omicron scare

Night curfew has been ordered with effect from 10 pm to 5 am daily in the district as part of the containment measures.

East Khasi Hills district administration has re-imposed containment measures to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 in Meghalaya.

"In view of the observed high transmissibility of this particular variant of the virus, it is deemed necessary to take urgent measures to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus to avoid an overwhelming strain on the health system and to avoid the loss of precious lives,” District Magistrate, I Laloo said in her order.

She also asserted that it is essential to take all possible precautions to prevent another surge in COVID-19 cases that will have a debilitating impact on the economy and put further stress on the healthcare systems.

The order further said that night curfew will be promulgated with effect from 10 pm to 5 am daily in the district as part of the containment measures while adding that there shall be a total ban on movement during this time. It also prohibits all official, public and political gatherings.

Weddings are permitted at 50 per cent of the capacity in an enclosed space and a maximum of 100 persons for unenclosed/open space, not exceeding 100 persons in either case. Any wedding for which permission has already been granted by this office will adhere to this limit. Wedding ceremonies in religious places of worship will be as per order from the Government of Meghalaya.

Prior permission is required from the undersigned for fresh applications. It is strongly advised that all attendees should be fully vaccinated.

Gatherings for which permission has already been granted by this office will be reviewed on case to case basis and may await this office permission.

Private transport within East Khasi Hills may ply on an odd-even number basis with those registration numbers ending in an odd number to ply on Monday and those ending in an even number to ply on Tuesday and to follow the odd-even sequence thereafter.

However, on Sundays, the restriction on the Odd-Even rule shall not apply. Exemptions only on a genuine and urgent basis will be granted which will be regulated vide separate orders. All SOPs are to be strictly followed in the vehicle.

Wearing masks is mandatory, the order said as it warned that anyone found without a mask is liable to be fined.
