A driver and a passenger from Bangladesh were caught while trying to illegally intrude in East Jaintia Hills, police said.

Acting on a tipoff that a few Bangladeshi nationals would try to intrude illegally into Indian territory through the jungle and the unfenced parts of the Indo-Bangla border, a joint operation was launched by a police team from Umkiang PPP.

The operation was led by In-charge, SS Buam and a team from Ratacherra Anti-Infiltration Check Post led by SI E Pohchen was assisted by the BSF party from Umkiang BOP to nab the illegal intruders, superintendent of police, East Jaintia Hills, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said.

The police officer then said that while the police team were on the lookout to nab the intruders, they spotted one person who came from the jungle area near the village of Pyrtakuna and hopped inside one grey colour Alto vehicle. On seeing a team of police and BSF personnel, the person tried to speed away but the team managed to intercept the vehicle at Kuliang village and apprehended the driver and the person.

On questioning, the police officer said that the driver who was identified as one Warif Uddin Laskar from Sarapur, Gumrah, Assam could not provide a satisfactory reply and on further interrogation the passenger of the vehicle seemed lost and spoke only in Bengali.

With the help of some locals who understood and spoke Bengali, the passenger disclosed his identity as one Masum Uddin from Bangladesh and he further revealed that there were some more Bangladeshi nationals who entered Indian territory illegally, but fled inside the jungle on seeing the BSF personnel, he said.
