Veteran journalist Kangujam Madhumangol passes away aged 79

Kangujam Madhumangol, founder member of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), passed away after battling with an illness at his residence at Kakwa Lamdaibung in Imphal on Friday evening. He was 79.

Veteran journalist and founder member of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) Kangujam Madhumangol passed away after battling with an illness at his residence at Kakwa Lamdaibung in Imphal on Friday evening. He was 79.  

AMWJU and Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) held a meeting on Saturday to express their heartfelt condolences on the demise of the senior journalist, AMWJU stated in a release. Kangujam Madhumangol had been bedridden for a long time due to an illness. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to a hospital on January 9 and breathed his last around 11.15 pm on Friday, AMWJU stated.

K Madhumangol was born on April 28, 1944. He worked as an assistant teacher at Phayeng High School from 1964 to 1968, it stated. From 1969 to 1974, he worked as a reporter of Prajatantra, a local daily and further worked as its editor from 1974 to 2002, it added. 

It continued that Madhumangol was employed as a stringer of UNI, Imphal Bureau from 1999 to 2002 and further worked as editor of ISTV News Editor from 2002 - 2007. He carried the post of the president of the Union, it mentioned.      

It mentioned K Madhumangol was also a prolific writer and published many books. Some of the books are ‘Head Master (Drama)’, ‘Wahangdi Leire’, ‘Wahangdi Leire Paokhumdi Leitri’, ‘Manipur Itihaski Tangkak Amada RK Maipaksana’, ‘Ngallingei Manipuri Journalism Amashung GC Tongbra’ and ‘Oja Chingkham Pishak’ etc. 

His book ‘Head Master’ won the first position at the Neo-Literate Book Competition, it mentioned. He was honoured with a list of awards such as ‘Oja Indramam Memorial Journalist Award 2004’, ‘NETV People’s Choice Award 2005’ ‘Epu Moirang Lala Hanba Award 2008’, ‘Certificate of Honour by Vishwa Samvad Kendra 2013’, ‘Manipur State Kala Akademi Award 2014’ and ‘Thiyam Premkumar Award 2019’, etc., it stated.

The condolence meeting was presided by AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shymjai, it mentioned. Late K Madhumangol’s works and accomplishments in the field of journalism were recalled during the meeting, it stated. His work as a founder member and president of AMWJU was also fondly remembered, it added. 

AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shyamjai expressed that the demise of K Madhumangol will leave a permanent void in the field of journalism in Manipur, it mentioned. A two-minute silence was observed in prayers for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace. The meeting also shared the loss of the bereaved family and friends, it added. 

Late K Madhumangol is survived by his wife Kangujam Manitombi, a son and two daughters.
