An unknown animal disease which broke out initially in June has now affected several pigs and killed over 70 at Phalee village in Ukhrul district.

Sources told the Imphal Free Press late Tuesday evening that the outbreak of the unknown disease reportedly hit the livestock farmers of Phalee in early June and has so far claimed over 70 pigs. The infected pigs continue to die, the sources added.

The infected pigs showed symptoms like high fever, difficulty in breathing, bodily weaknesses and loss of appetite.

Following the outbreak, field assistant stationed at the village Veterinary office, along with the two attendances, administered antibiotic to around 200 pigs. However, it was not effective as the injected ones continued to die one after another. Many are still infected, the sources added.

Elizar Raingam, a local, who is also the village development chairman of Phalee, lamented that he caters to as many as 50 pigs, including Hamshire, Yorkshire and mixed ones at his farm. Majority are mixed ones, however 10 pigs have succumbed to the disease, he said.

While fervently appealing to the government to provide financial assistance to the affected livestock farmers who had been hit hard by the unknown disease, he also urged the concerned Veterinary department to depute Vet doctors and collect the sample at the earliest in order that the disease is identified and remedial measures is taken up to prevent further casualties.

It may be mentioned that, in the recent past, the outbreak of animal disease was widely reported in different parts of Manipur causing massive loss to the livestock farmers as the deadly disease continued to spread and killed several domesticated animals, including Asiatic water buffaloes, pigs, cows, and poultry.

Much to the dismay of potato farmers, worms infestation and incessant rain had severely affected Kaziphung farm sites at Hungpung and Sirarakhong in Ukhrul district apart from several other areas.

In view of the massive havoc triggered by the epidemic, several farmers have also urged the state government to step in and look into their plights by extending financial assistance so that the heavy loss they have incurred from the unforeseen epidemic is somehow mitigated.

Several pigs have also recently died at Phaibhung Khunou in Senapati district and the concerned Vet department has collected the sample.

High fever, difficulty in breathing, bodily weaknesses, diarrhoea, coughing and vomiting are some of the common signs and symptoms associated with the African Swine Fever (ASF).
