The Co-ordinating Body of Trade Union, Manipur and Farmers Joint Action Committee, Manipur have jointly demanded rolling back of the Agnipath Scheme stating that the scheme would spoil the future of many youths.

A one-day convention was held against the Agnipath Scheme at Irawat Bhawan on Saturday, organised by the Co-ordinating Body of Trade Union, Manipur and Farmers Joint Action Committee, Manipur.

Addressing the convention as one of the presidium members, general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur, L Sotinkumar alleged that the main reason for launching the Agnipath Scheme is to reduce the defence budget of the country. The scheme doesn't have any objective but rather spoil the future of youth of the country. As such the India government should roll back the scheme in the interest of a larger population.

He further said that there is an utter failure in all policies and programmes taken up during the Modi-led government. The demonetisation was carried with the target of finding black money but its purpose was not served at the end; it rather gave a lot of trouble to the people, Sotinkumar said, adding with the implementation of Goods and Services Tax, it was the layman who suffered.

The present Modi-led government is more concerned about providing support to rich people instead of taking welfare for poor people, Sotinkumar alleged. They waive off the bank loans of the rich and the corporates as non-performing assets when it is not cleared, thus making the rich richer and the poor poorer, he added.''

President of All Manipur Agriculture Workers Union, S Nilakomol said that the main purpose of launching Agnipath Scheme is just to cover up their unfulfilled target of providing 2 crore jobs every year.

"The present BJP-led Modi government promised to give 2 crore jobs every year but they failed to achieve it. To mend up their image, Agnipath Scheme was launched," he explained while appealing to the India government not to play with or fool the people of the country by launching this aimless or visionless Agnipath Scheme.

The programme was also attended by many other representatives of the said committee and union.
