Thoubal Municipal Council ceases work in protest

Protesters demand release of pending salaries of six months, conversion of salaries of Urban Local Body employees and workers from plan to non-plan head, and to provide 7th pay commission for ULB staff.

Employees and workers of Thoubal Municipal Council on Monday began cease-work at Thoubal Municipal Council office complex, in support of Manipur Municipality Employees and Workers Union’s demands for the release of pending salaries of six months.

Thoubal Municipal Council employees organised the protest in support of the cease-work commenced on August 27 by Manipur Municipality Employees and Workers Union, demanding the authorities concerned for the immediate release of the pending salaries for six months.

The demands of the protesters include the release of the pending salaries of six months, conversion of salaries of Urban Local Body (ULB) employees and workers from plan to non-plan head, and to provide 7th pay commission for ULB staff.

Speaking at the event, All Manipur Municipality Employees and Workers Union, Manipur president Sougrakpam Roben said that following a meeting of the union held on August 7, the union had submitted their demands to the office of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD), government of Manipur.

Demanding the release of the pending salary by August 26, the union had cautioned to commence the cease-work protest for all Municipal Council employees of the state, if their demands are not provided. “The protesters condemned the authorities concerned for the lack of any positive response,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Kakching Municipal Council employees also demonstrated a similar protest in support of the Manipur Municipality Employees and Workers Union’s movement.
