Students in Tamenglong were urged to join hands with the health department to make Tamenglong free from HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis. The call was made during a district-level quiz competition held in Tamenglong HQ on Thursday.
"Students should join hands with the health department to make Tamenglong free from HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis," AIDS Control Officer Tamenglong Dr Aduana said, while addressing the event.
The quiz competition, organised by the District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU), was held at Tamenglong College under the theme "Be a part of New India". It is a part of the ongoing awareness campaign on HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis and breaking the taboos and myths on blood donation, Dr Aduana said.
"There is no cure for dreadful diseases like AIDS, hence prevention is the only way to be free from HIV-AIDS," Dr Aduana said, adding, "The most common cause of spreading HIV-AIDS is having multiple sex partners without using any protection. Needle sharing among drug users and mother to child transmission are also the common routes of transmission," she said.
Regarding tuberculosis, she said that it is curable. One should take timely tests at the nearest tuberculosis testing centre if symptoms develop. Early treatment can cure it, she added.
“There is no such a thing as one becoming unhealthy or weak after taking part in blood donation,” she said. An average human body has 1.2 to 1.5 gallons of blood and donating 470 ml of blood is nothing. It will be regenerated after 56 days and by donating only 470 ml of blood it can save three persons, she added.
“Let us come forward to donate blood to save millions of people who are in need of blood for survival,” the DAO said.
However, it may be pointed out that Tamenglong District Hospital is yet to have a blood bank facility.
The quiz competition programme was attended by College Principal Dr N Daimei, Tamenglong College associate professor Ninglu, District AIDs control officer Dr Aduana, district Hospital Tamenglong Pediatrician MO Dr M Neison, MS Stephen Chiru and District Hostpital Tamenglong ART Counsellor Lukhuanliu among others.
During the programme, District Hostpital Tamenglong ART counsellor Lukhuanliu said the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has decided to join hands with the New India campaign to build a free HIV-AIDs and Tuberculosis New India, she said.
Tamenglong College Principal Dr N Daimei encouraged the students to learn more about health to live a healthy and long life. He also said, “A man’s future is not determined by how brilliant you are but depend purely on the hard work and determination to reach the goal.” He then also distributed the Holy Bible to all the participants, stating that “this book is the rule of law that will help to lead a good life.”
