Three student bodies in Manipur on Sunday wrote to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, extending their full support to the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign while showing their appreciation to the ongoing efforts in fighting the drugs menace in the state.
The officer bearers of the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) on behalf of the students of Manipur University extended appreciation to N Biren for initiating the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign.
A letter addressed to the chief minister stated that illegal drug trade has been a backdoor business of almost every country, inhibiting the overall development of a nation and destroying the precious lives of resourceful youths of a nation and Manipur in particular, with drug addiction and immense human distress.
As youths seem to be the target of this drug menace and its abuse, MUSU extends wholehearted support to any steps under the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign and shall work among the youths and students of this state and Manipur University in particular to eradicate the drug problem in the State, it stated.
The Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) also extended full support to the campaign. In its letter addressed to the chief minister, MUTSU stated that it has recently witnessed a massive success in the campaign under Biren’s leadership, and lauded efforts made by the Law Enforcement Agencies.
MUTSU pointed out that the people have been struggling with free flow of various illicit drugs in the state since Manipur is geographically located in close vicinity of the infamous illicit opium production area —The Golden Triangle.
It is high time for the academicians, journalists and students as well, particularly from universities to come forward and support the campaign; help the government prepare an action plan and frame its mechanism against the illegal drug traffickers and drug abusers, it stated.
It further stated that apart from the moral support, the organisation will extend any necessary help in its own capacity any time in the future. Illegal drug dealers and drug abusers have long been posing an existential threat to the domestic and public health (both mental and physical) in the state with no leadership bravely coming forward to confront this social ill prior to N Biren’s leadership, the letter read.
It stated that N Biren’s forthright action on the ‘War on drugs’ in the state is one of the visible achievements no critic can be critical of his government. “You have a complete unanimity from the citizens of the state on your crackdown on illegal drug dealers and the drug addicts,” it stated.
In its letter, All College Tribal Students’ Union (ACTSU) announced that it will give full support to N Biren in the War on Drugs campaign in letter and spirit. ACTSU will extend any necessary help in its own capacity anytime and fight drug menace across the state, it stated.
Along with various leaders and civil organisations, ACTSU as a responsible student’s organisation will come forward and support the campaign against drugs, help the government against the illegal drug traffickers and abusers, the letter read.
