State collecting data of villagers affected by natural calamities: Minister Awangbow Newmai

Awangbow said that the main role of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) is to provide relief funds to the people affected by natural calamities and to rescue them from disaster sites by the State Disaster Response Force.

Manipur Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai, on Monday said that the state government is collecting reports for villagers affected by natural calamities during April to June, 2022 to distribute their relief fund amount at earliest.

He stated this on the 7th day of ongoing monsoon session of Manipur Legislative Assembly on Monday as response to a cut policy motion moved by Congress MLA  Th Lokeshwar Singh.

MLA Lokeshwar had moved a cut policy on account of improper distribution of relief funds and materials to the victim families.

Awangbow said that the main role of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) is to provide relief funds to the people affected by natural calamities and to rescue them from disaster sites by the State Disaster Response Force.

A sum is reserved for every District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to use in any natural disaster. However, the fund has to be released only after the submission of an affected report to the State Executive Committee (SEC) headed by the chief secretary, the Minister said.

This report has to be submitted to SEC through concerned deputy commissioners and sub-ordinate staff, he added while stating that the concerned authorities are in the process of data collection for affected villages. All necessary steps will be taken up so that the relief fund will be disbursed as soon as possible, the minister said.
