A large consignment of smuggled medicines worth approximately Rs 12 lakh was seized by the Assam Rifles personnel near Wanglee village in India-Myanmar border, HQ IGAR (South) stated on Saturday.
Based on specific inputs on smuggling of medicines across the Indo-Myanmar border, troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) activated the check posts at Bungdung in Kamjong district and two Shaktiman trucks bearing registration numbers MN 04A 1079 and MN 03P 0696, moving from Imphal to Wanglee were stopped for checking on Thursday, HQ IGAR said in a release.
On enquiry, the drivers produced 14 tax invoices of drugs and medicines worth Rs. 7,90,357, it stated. The drivers, Shanireingam and Varekam informed them that they were going to cross the border into Myanmar near Wanglee village, it added.
On detailed scrutiny of the invoice receipts, it was observed that the tax invoices were not stamped by any authorized seller and were fake, it stated.
The vehicles along with the drivers and co-drivers were taken to Kasom Khullen Police Station and the total 92 boxes present in the two vehicles were unloaded and locked up in cell of Kasom Khullen Police Station, it added.
Since no electricity was available at Kasom Khullen Police Statoin, physical verification of the recovered items was carried out at 11 am on Friday in the presence of Assam Rifles troops and Police, the release stated.
The approximate value of the medicines was found to be Rs 12 lakh, which is more than the value of 7.9 lakh as mentioned in the tax invoice, it added.
The recovered medicines along with the drivers and co-drivers of the vehicles were handed over to Kasom Khullen Police Station for further investigations and actions.
