Rs 59,000 crore increased allocation for scholarship will help timely payments to beneficiaries: Manipur CM Biren

The Central Government on Wednesday announced increased financial allocation of Rs 59,000 crore in Post Matric Scholarship for SC students.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren lauded the Union government’s "big push" for the education of the weaker section of society and said that the increased financial allocation for Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Castes (PMS-SCs) will help ensure timely payments to beneficiaries.

In the effort to push education of SC students, the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry on Wednesday announced a revision in the PMS-SCs scheme with an increased financial allocation of Rs 59,000 crore.

“Union Cabinet's revision of Post Matric Scholarship Scheme with an increased financial allocation of Rs 59,000 Crore is the continuation of PM @narendramodi ji's vow to uplift weaker sections. It will benefit 4 Crore SC Students in 5 years & ensure timely payments to beneficiaries,” CM Biren tweeted.

The increased financial allocation for PMS-SCs is aimed at “transformatory changes” such as a reduction in the number of dropout students. The scheme focuses on the poorest households in the country, the ministry said, adding the benefits of the scheme is targeted to reach four crore SC students in five years.

The push for education with an enhanced financial allocation is expected to help millions of students in the country achieve sustainable livelihood and improved economic conditions. It also aims to ensure a better monitoring system and social audits to create transparency and accountability in providing education to the weaker section of society.

The steps taken are also aimed at providing quality education in higher education to SC students across the country.
