Four Rongmei civil bodies on behalf of all the Rongmei people settled in Assam, Manipur and Nagaland etc. on Monday condemned the “continual cruel hands of AFSPA” which is still in operation over the Northeastern people.

The four bodies are the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO), Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation Manipur (RNYOM), Rongmei Naga Students Organisation (RNSO) and the Rongmei Luh Phuam (RLP) Northeast India.

The recent killing at the Oting village in Nagaland is a fresh reminder and resurfacing of atrocities and suppressive AFSPA operation in Naga-inhabited areas, stated a joint release issued by the four Rongmei bodies.

“The act is an intentional plan and attitude of India towards the Northeastern people. Such barbaric treatments committed by the so-called largest democratic nation are ‘very unbecoming’ and a contradicting display of inhumanity before the world,” it stated.

In protest against the activities of Indian Armed forces in connection with the recent killing at Oting, the Rongmei people demonstrated a candle light observation on Sunday at Tarung, Imphal West, it mentioned.

Asserting that the effect of AFSPA in Northeast since its inception has been enormous and disastrous, causing lives of innocent civilians and dehumanising the people of the region, the release mentioned that the death toll and cost and worth of destruction meted by “Indian draconian laws, AFSPA” is untold and beyond computation.

It is time for India to make a historic change by repealing AFSPA policy at once at the earliest, it further said, failing which the people of the region may resort to a mass movement.
