Former rebel leader RK Meghen on Thursday stressed the urgent need for collective action to turn the slogan of “Manipur Kaiba Yaroy” into actionable efforts emphasising the failure of the government to restore normalcy.

He was addressing the gathering during a public convention held at Konthoujam Ima Lairembi Masaikol in Imphal West. It was organised by the Peoples’ Protection Committee, Konthoujam.

Reflecting on the unprecedented deployment of central forces in response to aggression by Kuki militants against the Meitei community, Meghen questioned the effectiveness of such a massive deployment over the past nine months.

He criticised the central government as “irresponsible” for being a passive observer while the state grapples with unrest.

Addressing public resentment towards the Assam Rifles, accused of siding with Kuki militants, Meghen shifted blame to the central government, suggesting biases might stem from orders from higher authorities.

Drawing historical parallels, he likened the current situation to the Awas (Burmese) re-waging war against Manipur in 1819.

Meghen warned of a prolonged conflict, asserting that the ongoing war in Manipur is not solely against the Meetei community but a broader assault on the entire state to suppressed and completely break down the Meetei community.

“There is no guarantee that the ongoing war in Manipur will end soon, as the spirit of war has been ignited to every people of Manipur,” he said, expressing concerns about the economic fallout, urging unity among the people to prevent further confrontations.

The convention which was also attended by the convenor of Forum for Restoration of Peace Ashang Kasar among other CSO leaders resulted in resolutions aimed at pressing the government for a change in leadership of the Unified Command.

They called for the transfer of the Unified Command charge from security advisor Kuldiep Singh to Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

It also decided to urge both the opposition and ruling representatives to unite and persuade the central government for restoration of normalcy in Manipur.

Focusing on economic activities along with the movement to wipe out Kuki militants and save the integrity of Manipur, was also a part of the resolution.
