As winter sets in again in Manipur, most of the major rivers in Imphal valley are slowly drying up, forcing the state government to announce irregular water supply to the general public.

The water level of Iril River, one of the key sources of potable water, has dipped below the pumping level, prompting the government engineering unit to supply tap water on an irregular basis to various key locations in the Imphal East district.

PHED, Manipur, executive engineer of water supply maintenance division No 2 on December 5 issued a notice that there will be irregular water supply to the general public in the areas covered by Porompat Water Treatment Plant as the raw water level in the Iril River has gone down below pumping level.

The areas covered by the plant included Sanjenthong officer quarters, JNIMS Hospital, New Checkon, Nongmeibung, Tribal Colony, Khalabung Leirak, Soibam Leikai, Ayangpalli Road, Kongpal, Khurai Sajor Leikai, Thoudam Leikai, Thangjam Leikai, Tinsid Road, Tellipati, Wangkhei Khunou, Hatta, Rahamania, Top Khongnangkhong, etc.

It also stated that the normal water supply will resume when raw water is available in abundance at the Iril River.

The executive engineer, in a separate notification, informed that trial and testing of newly constructed service reservoir at Cheiraoching hilltop will commence from December 7.

According to reports, Manipur has been receiving an annual rainfall of 1,467.5 mm, which is higher than the national average. The entire population of Imphal and semi-urban areas need 101.9 million litres per day.

However, the actual production from 17 water supply plants in the Imphal area are yet to meet the growing demands.
