RIMS staff gets 17-year jail term

RIMS staff was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor patient in 2019.

A Special Judge (POCSO) Fast Track Court on Monday sentenced convicted RIMS lab technician to 17 years, four months and three days rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 for sexually assaulting a minor patient inside ECG room in 2019.

The case was taken up after the victim’s mother lodge a police complaint on October 3, 2019, alleging that her daughter was raped by the accused Thokchom Suraj (39) of the Keishamthong area in Imphal West district.

The court on July 27, convicted the accused for the offence punishable under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012.

During the sentence hearing, special PP prayed for grievous punishment while the offender asked for leniency.

The court, after hearing both, sentenced the convict for 20 years of rigorous imprisonment with fine. However, as the accused was in custody for a period of two years seven months and 27 days, the days he was under custody was set off and then sentenced to 17 years, four months and three days rigorous imprisonment.

Further, the court directed the state government to pay Rs 1,50,000 to the victim from the Victim Compensation Fund or other scheme.
