Rapist sentenced to 25-year rigorous imprisonment

The court convicted the accused on May 5 under section 6 & 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) for having committed ‘Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault’ and ‘Aggravated Sexual Assault’ on a  minor girl on January 10, 2020.

Special Judge (POCSO), Churachandpur N Keertichand on Monday sentenced a man convicted for raping a minor girl to 25-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000, and additional seven years and fine of Rs 15,000 respectively.

The sentence was awarded to the convicted under section 6 and 10 of POCSO Act, 2012 will run concurrently, the court added.

The court convicted the accused namely Lienkhosiem Hrawte aged about 52 years, son of (L) Hranghleithang Hrawte of Thingchom village, Churachandpur district, on May 5 under section 6 & 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) for having committed ‘Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault’ and ‘Aggravated Sexual Assault’ on a  minor girl on January 10, 2020.

During the sentence hearing, special additional public prosecutor submitted that the accused is convicted under section 6 and 10 of POCSO Act, 2012 for committing aggravated penetrative sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault to the minor girl.

It was further submitted that the crime committed by the accused is a serious offence and prayed for maximum sentence of life imprisonment with fine for committing the offence.

On the other hand, the counsel contended that there is no evidence of bad moral character of the convict in his life. The counsel prayed for awarding the minimum sentence prescribed under section 6 and 10 of POCSO Act.

After the submission, the court sentenced him for rigorous imprisonment.

The court also recommended providing compensation of Rs 5 lakh only to the victim under the Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019 as per section 33(2)) of POCSO Act as well as under section 357A of the Code of Criminal Procedure to the Victim.
