Rapist sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment

The convict Shamurailatpam Tomba Sharma, 35, son of Sh Ibotombi Sharma of Yairipok Top Makha Leikai was convicted for commiting the offence of aggravated sexual assault which is punishable under section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012 on May 11.

A man convicted of raping a five-year-old minor in 2019 was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 3,000 by the Fast Track Special Court No 2, Manipur on Friday.

The convict Shamurailatpam Tomba Sharma, 35, son of Sh Ibotombi Sharma of Yairipok Top Makha Leikai was convicted for commiting the offence of aggravated sexual assault which is punishable under section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012 on May 11.

After completion of investigation, the investigating officer of the case submitted the charge sheet against him under section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012. The court, after completing the trial, convicted him under the same.

During the sentence hearing, the counsel of the convict submitted that he has no antecedent and has no involvement in any criminal case. The counsel stated that the accused has a family and is the sole breadwinner, and prayed to take a lenient view.

On other hand, the special public prosecutor submitted that the crime against female children in the society is on the rise and to send a message to the society that it is necessary to deal strictly by providing a deterrent punishment. Stating that the offence is grave in nature as per the POCSO act, the special public prosecutor prayed for maximum punishment.

The court after considering the submission, sentenced the convict to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

The court further directed the state government to pay Rs 2 lakh to the victim from the victim compensation fund or any other schemes.
