Womenfolk on Monday condemned the life attempt on the father of a sexual assault victim on May 20 and staged a sit-in protest at Tera Lukrakpam Leikai in Imphal West. The protesting womenfolk belonged to Tera Lukrakpam Leikai and Amudon Akham Leikai.

The accused, identified as Irom Rakesh alias Naoba, along with five of his associates allegedly abducted the father in a vehicle and physically assaulted him using a sledge hammer on the night of May 20.

Narrating the history to reporters, a protester identified as one Paonam Sanahabi said that the accused, a school van driver, was arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a five-year-old, one of the passengers of the school van, on April 2, 2018. The accused was, however, released on bail, she added.

Then, as recently as on May 20, the father's life was attempted by the accused along with his associates for reasons best known to the accused, she said, adding that as a result the father is now in a critical situation with several fractures and injuries.

On the other hand, the accused is still absconding despite a complaint lodged to the Manipur police in regard to his second crime, she informed.

Drawing the attention of the state government to immediately arrest all the culprits and award benefitting punishment, the protesters said that the family members of the accused persons should also bear all the expenses for the treatment of the father.

The protesters also warned of intensifying the agitation if no action is initiated against the accused persons without any delay.
