Public convention denounces NHPC extension

The public convention held at Ithai Wapokpi public ground in Bishnupur district on Sunday resonated that the locals will not survive without Loktak.

A public convention on Impact of Loktak Hydro Electric Power Project organised by People’s Committee on Restoration of Loktak and its Associated Wetlands, Manipur resolved that a collective determination to resist the continuation of National Hydro Project Corporation (NHPC) is of utmost importance.

The public convention held at Ithai Wapokpi public ground in Bishnupur district on Sunday resonated that the locals will not survive without Loktak.

The convention has resolved that NHPC should not be extended for more than 25 years and Loktak Protection Act, 2006 should be reviewed.

It resolved that a white paper or a clarification should be given to the general public about the extension of NHPC for more than 25 years by the government. It resolved that compensation for destruction of people’s property by NHPC should be given etc.

The convention was attended by writer Ranjit Ningthouja; environmental journalist Rajesh Salam; state coordinator, Manipur, Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) RK Birjit; and retired principal, Kumbi College K Jugeshwor.

The gathering numbering around 1,000 people shouted slogans such as ‘No extension of NHPC’, ‘We won’t survive without Loktak’.
