Students of Khangabok Higher Secondary School and locals of Khangabok, Thoubal district on Saturday demonstrated a sit-in protest against the extension of the median of National Highway-102 near Khangabok Higher Secondary School.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Khangabok Development and Students Union (KDASU) president Thokchom Kiran Meitei said the locals and the students and guardians of the Khangabok Higher Secondary School had been urging the authorities concerned, including Thoubal DC, SP and the officials of GR Infra Project Ltd, to widen the gap in the median of NH 102 in front of the school and near the exit to Khangabok village from the highway connecting Imphal to Moreh.
Although the authorities concerned had extended assurance that the gap will be widened, at 12.30 am on Saturday, workers of GR Infra Project arrived and extended the road divider closing the gap in the median completely, he added.
With more than 10 schools nearby, the area is an “education zone”. So the passageway through the median gap is necessary to facilitate the transport of the students, he maintained.
He cautioned that if the authorities concerned ignore their demand for widening the median gap, the protesters will voice their protest to the officials of the Central government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A number of Thoubal police personnel had arrived at the protest to prevent any unwanted disturbances caused by the huge gatherings of protesters who blocked the road from 12 pm to 2 pm.
