Police training on Human Trafficking and Child Protection

Training on human trafficking and child protection was held to strengthen police response mechanism to effectively handle cases of human trafficking and child victims.

A one-day training programme was organised by FXB India Suraksha, in association with Churachandpur district police, on Thursday with the objective to strengthen police response mechanism to effectively handle cases of human trafficking and child victims.

The event also included discussion on the existing laws related to child protection and human trafficking whereabout 15 police officers, including Women Police Stations, Anti-human trafficking Units and strategic Police Stations participated.

The programme was conducted as part of Project Mukti, an Anti-trafficking initiative, to combat human trafficking and child sexual abuse in Manipur implemented with the support of ECPAT Luxembourg where Sunil Khoinaijam Meitei and A Wungreiso Shangh, Project Officers, FXB India Suraksha were the resource persons who explained the different legislations related to human trafficking, Protection of Children from Sexual offences Act, 2012 and Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) of Children Act (Amended) 2021, which were supported by case studies, audio-visual learning materials etc.

Sunil spoke about various concepts related to human trafficking where, apart from discussing sections especially section 370 of the Indian Penal Code that defines trafficking in persons, he also spoke about the steps to be taken to combat organized crime. He also spoke about various challenges associated in identification, screening and accessing services by victims of trafficking.

Shangh touched upon the legislations related to child protection and shared the procedures mandated for Police and other relevant stakeholders under the laws. He also discussed the various challenges and barriers faced in handling cases of children with respect to Manipur state and the possible solutions to ensure the safety and security of children and women.

Additional SP of Churachandpur, Hasby Haokip thanked the FXBIS saying “Human Trafficking and child protection is two important issues which we, as law enforcers, should be sensitive about and take it as a very important issue. Such training is very necessary and needs to be conducted periodically to keep ourselves updated with relevant information and knowledge.”

FXB India Suraksha has been implementing Project Mukti since 2015 and at present is implementing Phase II of the project. Till date the project has been conducting a series of training programs for law enforcement officials including Paramilitary officials in Manipur. FXB India Suraksha, with its offices in Imphal and Ukhrul, also conveyed that they are willing and available to assist any stakeholders and community on these issues.
