Manipur police on Sunday foiled a sit-in-protest held by womenfolk of Uripok Yambem Leikai at the roadside of Uripok road stretch in Imphal West against the state government’s move to lift prohibition. The police said DC’s permit to hold the protest was not obtained.
Later, the womenfolk changed the location of the protest to the community hall of the locality.
Speaking to the media, Yambem Momonleima said it is unfortunate that the state government is trying to lift the prohibition despite the movement by Meira Paibis to ban liquor since the last many decades.
“It is indeed a mockery to all the Meira Paibis of Manipur,” she said, highlighting the various issues and crimes that arise from alcohol abuse.
As a negative impact of alcohol abuse, the rate of widows and crime against women, including domestic violence cases, are rapidly increasing in the state, she added.
She appealed to the state government to reconsider its move to legalise liquor, saying the Meira Paibis of Manipur will never accept liquor legalisation.
Terming the police action of foiling the sit-in protest as unfortunate, she said such similar protests were taken up at other locations in the past.
