One apprehended, AK-47 seized in Moreh

Security forces arrested one man with AK-47 rifle in the forest area of Leiyangphai village at the India-Myanmar border.

Personnel of Moreh Battalion, 5 Assam Rifles, have apprehended an individual and an assault rifle seized from his possession in Moreh on Monday.

The apprehended individual has been identified as one Paobul Mate, 47, son of Khatliam Mate, from Lhangnom veng, Moreh Ward No IX. He was arrested in the forest area of Leiyangphai village near the iron bridge at the India-Myanmar border around 11:45 pm on Monday.

As per sources, one AK 47 assault rifle (No.18132), one magazine, five rounds of AK 47 (7.62mm Burmese origin) were seized from his possession. One mobile phone along with a SIM Card and a Kenbo Bike were also seized from him. 

The 5 AR team, while on routine patrolling, spotted a suspicious movement of two Individuals on a Kenbo Bike, sources said. When the AR team signaled them to stop the two, it took a U-turn and tried to flee towards the forest area of Leiyangphai, it said.

The Assam Rifle personnel chased the duo and challenged them to stop, during which  the two Individuals stopped their bike and tried to flee. However, the AR team overpowered one of the duo while the other managed to escape towards the India-Myanmar border by taking advantage of the forest and the darkness of the night.

The apprehended individual along with the seized items were handed over to the Moreh police station, police said.
