As many as 18 people were injured in a road accident near Nungsai Tubung village along Bishnupur-Khoupum Road under Khoupum Police station, Noney District, Manipur on Tuesday, sources said.
All the injured persons were immediately rushed to Imphal and admitted in RajMedicity Hospital for medical treatment. However, two succumbed to their injuries after being brought to the hospital, police said.
The deceased were identified as one Ringchangai Kamei, 22, of Longmai-1 and Peijianliu Kamei, 21-year-old daughter of Thonkulung of Rongdai village under Nungba police station, police said.
The police said the ill-fated accident took place around 11.30 am when a vehicle Bolero Pickup registered No MN01AA3637 carrying workers of BJP in 54-Nungba assembly constituency suffered mechanical failure.
The BJP workers were travelling towards Khoupum to attend a BJP rally at Thanagong in Khoupum on Tuesday, where Chief Minister Biren Singh also attended, police added.
While the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, investigation is underway, police sources said.
Meanwhile, the chief minister took to Twitter after addressing the BJP public meeting held at Khoupum on Tuesday and said:
"Addressed the people of Nungba Constituency during the Public Meeting held at Khoupum Valley today. The immense support that we have witnessed is a confirmation that the people of Nungba are ready to elect the BJP candidate, Shri Dipu Gangmei as their MLA".
