Mob destroys properties of alleged rapist in Thoubal

The accused sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl.

An irate mob destroyed properties, including a car and household items, belonging to an alleged rapist who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl, at Samaram Maning Leikai in Thoubal district on Thursday.

The incident took place at around 2.30 pm under the jurisdiction of Khongjom Police station.

Khongjom Police, commando personnel, and Fire Services team rushed to the spot to douse the fire and control the mob. The alleged rapist is identified as 41-year-old Asem Konungjao, son of late Tomba.

According to reports, the victim and the accused are neighbours. Konungjao allegedly raped the girl two to three months ago while the girl was watching TV at his house with another girl. He also allegedly threatened the girl with a knife not to disclose the incident to anyone.

The incident came to light when the elders questioned the girl after noticing sudden changes in behaviour. Khongjom Police station arrested the accused on December 17 after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family and has been in police custody since.

He was produced before CJM Thoubal on Thursday.

Irate locals and family members of the victim stormed the court complex and chanted various slogans demanding lifetime imprisonment be awarded to the accused. Asem Konungjao has been remanded in Judicial custody for 14 days for further investigation.
