MHRC issues show cause notice to Manipur government

MHRC on Wednesday notified the Manipur government to submit a show cause as to why appropriate directions should not be issued for alleged illegal arrest of advocate Sanoujam Shyamcharan.

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Wednesday notified the Manipur government to submit a show cause as to why appropriate directions, including payment of interim monetary relief, should not be issued for alleged illegal arrest of advocate Sanoujam Shyamcharan.

The notification was issued through the chief secretary, DGP Manipur, SP- Imphal West, City Police OC after the MHRC registered a complaint case of the said advocate.

In his complaint, the advocate stated that he was a victim of unlawful arrest by OC, City police station in connection with an FIR registered against him under section 120B/124/295A/504/505(2)/506 IPC.

He alleged that the OC of City police station unreasonably, unjustly and illegally registered the FIR case against him because he had made some observation upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah while participating and speaking at a discussion in a local news channel on April 9.

He was released on bail by Duty Magistrate on April 12, 2022 on the ground that his arrest was illegal.

Afterwards, the advocate filed the complaint case for the commission’s intervention and appropriate directions.
