The Royal Palace on Thursday announced that the annual Mera Hou Chongba festival, which falls on October 28, the 15th day of Mera Month in the Meitei lunar calendar will be observed at Kangla.
The event will be organised by the state-level organising committee on Mera Hou Chongba 2023, stated a release. It also highlighted the festival's importance, asserting that it signifies unity, integrity and eternal bonding between various ethnic communities of the state.
It lamented that the usual religious fervour, gaiety and gathering of the festival will not be possible due to prevailing unrest in the state. It maintained that celebrations will be toned down, with just the observance of religious rituals, considering the ongoing situation.
It also mentioned that maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba will also address a gathering on the eve of the festival on Friday and will lead the cultural procession, marking the beginning of the festival on Saturday. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Ministers and MLAs are also expected to attend the celebration at Kangla Uttra, it added.
