Manipur's nine districts 'highly vulnerable' to COVID-19

A recent report stated that several districts in poll-bound states - Manipur, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh represent “high vulnerability to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic due to the Omicron variant”.

Nine districts of Manipur represent “high vulnerability” to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic due to the Omicron variant, according to a recent report entitled ‘Vulnerability of Districts for Covid-19’ by an empowered group set up by the Centre on Covid-19.

The report stated that several districts in poll-bound states - Manipur, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh represent “high vulnerability to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic due to the Omicron variant,” and their population face “heightened risk of severe disease and adverse outcomes.”

The report was made available to the Health and Family Welfare Ministry recently, according to a news report by The Indian Express.

According to it, 65 of the 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh, all 22 districts in Punjab and nine of the 16 districts in Manipur are listed as Category 1 and Category 2 districts that represent high vulnerability to the emerging COVID-19 variant of Omicron.

Two districts of Manipur fall under Category 1 of the vulnerable districts for COVID-19.

Manipur on Tuesday witnessed a sudden spurt in daily Covid-19 cases as 116 people tested positive for the infection even as one more patient succumbed to the disease, according to the state Health Services.

The state's total caseload mounted to 1,26,344, while its death toll reached 2012 as of Tuesday. The cumulative number of COVID-19 recoveries is now 1,23,793. The total number of active cases surged to 539.

The total number of people who have been administered the vaccine has reached 23,56,145 (first dose: 13,45,049, second dose: 10,10,506 and precautionary dose: 590).
