Manipuris in South Korea draw government’s attention

The Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) has urged the Centre to review the recent deployment of Central armed forces in Manipur to resolve the crisis situation in the state.

Manipuri Diasporas residing in South Korea on Tuesday drew the attention of the Central and Manipur governments to the urgent need for resolving the prevailing communal conflict in the state.

The Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) submitted a memorandum to the Embassy of India in Seoul, appealing for peace and resolution of the unrest, a release stated. It expressed grief over the sufferings caused by the ongoing violence and asserted that it has aggravated with the involvement of armed infiltrators crossing the porous Indo-Myanmar border, it said.

KMA placed demands to the Centre and the state governments which includes acting instantly on the armed infiltrators crossing the Indo-Myanmar border, putting an end to unchecked mass deforestation and poppy cultivation in hills areas of the state, ensuring compensation to families of the deceased, reconstruction of houses, resettlement of the displaced persons to their original locations and to Implement National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Manipur at the earliest, it stated.

It further expressed discontentment over the ostensible behaviours and activities of the Assam Rifles in allegedly assisting Kuki militants to continue committing various heinous crimes against innocent Meitei civilians, it mentioned. 

As such, KMA urged the Centre to rearrange and recheck the recent deployment of Central armed forces in Manipur, to end involvement of Assam Rifles immediately and human rights violations upon Meitei civilians by immediate withdrawal of AR from Manipur and to enable free movement of vehicles plying along National Highway 2 and ensure safety of the drivers and passengers, it added.
