Manipur trade unions join two-day nationwide general strike

The leadership of the AITUC, CITU, HMS, INTUC, TUCC, UTUC and independent trade unions jointly organised a protest rally in the heart of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.

The Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions Manipur stated that the first day of two-day nationwide general strike ‘Save The People and Save The Nation’ at the call of Joint Platform of the Central Trade Unions (CTUs) was organised by the body on Monday.

Day one witnessed a total general strike in banks, BSNL, LIC, post offices, where sit-in-protests, demonstrations and protest meetings were held in their respective office premises, Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions stated in a release signed by its convenor Kshetrimayum Santa.

The AIBEA, BEFI, AIBOA jointly organised the demonstrations in banks and other unions in their respective office campuses, it stated. The state government offices witnessed thin attendance as the strongest state government employees federation Manipur Government Employees Federation, an affiliated body to the AISGEF, the scheme workers, namely ASHA , Anganwadi, Mid-day-meal workers, NRM and other scheme workers also participated in the general strike, it mentioned.

It further stated that the unorganised sector workers, including construction workers and rural workers with local peasants participated in the general strike.

The Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions is a conglomerate of Central and State level trade unions, including AITUC, CITU, INTUC, TUCC, UTUC, Independent trade unions of BSNL, Bank, LIC, Post, AG and state government employees, it added.
