Mounted police will be introduced for the first time in Imphal City which will not only help preserve tradition of forefathers but also promote Manipuri ponies, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Wednesday during the 131st Manipur Police Raising Day celebration held at parade ground of 1st Manipur Rifles, Imphal.
As the chief guest, Biren said that when Manipur was a Kingdom, Manipuri cavalries played a major role during the war.
The present society needs to follow and preserve the contributions that the forefathers of Manipur did to protect Manipur from outside forces, the CM added.
To preserve the Manipuri culture and to promote Manipur ponies, 20 mounted police will be introduced in Imphal City to patrol within the city area.
A committee led by IGP Themthing Ngasava has been created in order to point out police personnel among Manipur police who are fond of horse riding, he added.
The government is also planning to introduce more mounted police in other police stations so that Manipuri ponies can be promoted, said Biren.
Appreciating the various activities of Manipur police personnel including Manipur Rifles, IRBs and others, Biren said that the central government did not approve to depute Manipur police in border areas.
However, with the various activities and achievements brought by the Manipur police, the central government has lifted the objection to depute Manipur Police at border areas.
Due to this 34 police outposts were established along the stretches of border area starting from Jessami, Ukhrul to Behiang, Churachandpur, Biren added.
Earlier the border areas were only deputed with Assam Rifles but due to increasing number of porous borders and becoming a ‘heaven road’ for illegal smugglers including arms, drugs and others, the central government approved deputing Manipur police after witnessing their achievements in the border areas, he added.
He also cautioned the police personnel not to be involved in any illegal activities as police are meant to protect people and the society. He also appealed to them to intensify frisking and checking, especially for drugs, as it will be a big shame for Manipur to hear news that Manipuri drug smugglers are caught in other parts of the state.
Biren said Manipur police has become one of the best police and to motivate the morale of police, the government needs to govern with transparency without corruption. He assured that the present government will not allow anyone to do corruption in transfer-posting, police recruitment and others.
To bring discipline among the police personnel he appealed to the DGP, Manipur to organise a language class at least once a week for various local dialects. Learning various local dialects could bring unity among the personnel, he added.
Chief minister said the state cabinet had also decided to increase the monthly honorarium of VDF and to grant 15 days compensatory leave in a year. The government also committed for 10 per cent reservation for VDF personnel during recruitment of riflemen and constable.
Informing that notification for recruitment of various posts in the Police department and Health department has been issued, he also appealed to the youths of the State to join the Agniveer Recruitment Rally to be held at Leimakhong from November 23 to December 5.
The chief minister also felicitated Rahul Laishram, topper of the High School Leaving Certificate Examinations, 2022 conducted by Board of Secondary Education Manipur.
The main highlights of the observation were the Nishan Toli and March Past comprising 16 contingents from Combined Manipur Rifles Male, Combined Indian Reserve Battalion Male Contingent No. 1, Combined Indian Reserve Battalion Male Contingent No. 2, Civil Police Imphal West Male, Civil Police Imphal East Male, Civil Police Bishnupur Male, Combined Civil Police Male (Kakching and Thoubal Districts), Combined Civil Police Contingent Hill District No 1, Combined Civil Police Contingent Hill District No. 2, Combined Commando Contingent, 9th India Reserve (Mahila) Battalion, Combined Civil Police Female, Home Guard Male, Combined VDF Male, Traffic Police Women Contingent and Manipur police Dog squad Imphal East & Imphal West and K-9 centre, Lamphel. The Combined Band Platoon comprised 1st MR Band, 2nd MR Band, IRB Band, MPTC Band, 9 IRB Band, Home Guard (Male) Band and VDF Band. The Commander of the parade was Rahul Gupta, IPS.
The Raising Day observation was also attended by cabinet ministers of state, MPs, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP and high ranking civil and police officials among others.
