Manipur observes Martyrs' Day

Governor La Ganesan led the people in paying homage by laying a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal.

Manipur joined the nation in observing Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day on the 75th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation- Mahatma Gandhi, on Monday.

On this day, India paid homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to free India from the oppressive British regime.

Governor La Ganesan led the people in paying homage by laying a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal.

“We want to follow Mahatma Gandhi, which means Swadeshi, should know. After independence, what we can learn from the history of Mahatma Gandhi is simplicity. We have to follow Mahatma Gandhi," the governor said.

Power and Forest Minister Th Biswajit, other ministers, MLA and top civil and police officials also laid wreaths at the Mahatma's statue.

A two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed freedom fighters.

Mahatma Gandhi's favorite devotional song "Raghubati Raghav Raja Ram" was also sung on the occasion.
