The 14-year-old gangrape victim, who was battling for life at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of RIMS died around 11 am on Thursday. Her family members strongly condemned the inhuman act and demanded to hand over the accused to the public.

The minor girl was gangraped and left unconscious on the roadside, between Irong to Heibong Makhong under Mayang Imphal police station. It is suspected that she was left to die on the roadside after the brutal sexual assault.

The victim's sister Ichan (name changed) told Imphal Free Press that her sister was found unconscious by pedestrians on the roadside early Wednesday morning. The victim was immediately rushed to Mayang Imphal PHC and referred to RIMS hospital. It took a long time to provide medical assistance to the victim as she had to undergo COVID-19 test, Ichan said. The victim was first given treatment at RIMS casualty before being shifted to Gynae ward and she later shifted to ICU, she added.

Ichan further said that her sister was able to speak and eat from 2pm to 5pm on Wednesday. However, the victim’s condition deteriorated. She said that around 3am of Thursday, the victim appeared to be in pain and struggling.

Doctors said that the victim died due to the physical torture she had undergone. She suffered from multiple injuries, including excessive bleeding, hypoxic brain damage, metabolic acidosis and sexual assault. The victim's body was full of torture marks, the marks showed she was kicked and bitten as well. Her private parts were also injured, the doctors said.

Ichan asserted that she along with her family informed the doctors but they were told that nothing will happen. The victim was reportedly struggling till 10 am today and at around 11 am, the doctors announced that she was no more.

“My sister has been the sole bread earner of our family after two other sisters got married. She weaves and makes traditional dresses to earn money,” said the victim's sister. Her handicapped father and her brother are depending on her as well.

Ichan narrated that on Tuesday night at around 8.30 pm, the victim informed her that she was going out to buy some essential items.

She further narrated that on August 30, the victim informed her that she was planning to elope with her boyfriend but did not mention the specific day she would elope. On the night when the victim went shopping, some locals saw her along with five boys, said Ichan. So, she assumed that her sister left home to elope with her boyfriend, she said.

The family members with the JAC formed in connection with the incident said that the body of the girl will be collected after the culprits are arrested and handed over to the public.

On September 2, the family members submitted a written report to the Women Police Lamphel, Imphal West demanding arrest of the culprits involved in the crime. Although the incident occurred in Mayang Imphal, the case had to be registered at the Women police station as per POCSO guidelines.

Following the incident, a mob vandalised and burned down the house of the arrested accused Md Arish alias Maza Khan, 19, son of Sikandar Ali of Mayang Imphal Heibong Mathak Leikai. Md Arish was reportedly in a love relationship with the victim.

The police produced him before the Special Judge POCSO, Imphal West with the appeal for seven days’ police custody after registering an FIR against him under section 307, 325 IPC and 6 POCSO Act. The court granted the police prayer and remanded him to seven-day police custody till September 9.

Meanwhile, tension erupted among the public after hearing the death of the victim. An enraged mob attempted to vandalise the house of another suspected culprit but the situation was brought under control by a police team under the supervision of SP Meghachandra, Imphal West.

Members of Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) women’s wing led by president of MMWO Abdullah Pathan stormed the CM’s Bungalow with the demand to immediately arrest the remaining suspects immediately and give appropriate punishment against the perpetrators according to law.

While vehemently condemning the act, the MCPCR chairman said that severe punishment should be awarded to the perpetrators as per the law of the land.
