Manipur CM Biren inaugurates 100-bedded Dedicated COVID Block at JNIMS

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday inaugurated the state's first-ever 100-bedded Dedicated COVID Block at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal.

"100-bedded Dedicated COVID Block at JNIMS inaugurated today and handed over to the people and the medical professionals who are leading from the front in the fight against #COVID19 pandemic," Biren tweeted.

Also, addressing the function as chief guest, Biren said that the state has been putting strenuous efforts to contain COVID-19 pandemic. However, the number of COVID-19 cases is still increasing persistently while the increasing number of mortality is also a matter of great concern. Considering the prevailing scenario, it is high time to find the loopholes and fight the pandemic by collectively carrying out each one’s responsibilities, he said.

Encouraging the health professionals to perform their duties with more sincerity, he said that every section of society has acknowledged the services being provided by health professionals during the prevailing pandemic to save many lives from Coronavirus. But the situation demands an increase in their efforts and dedication that they have been giving, he added.

Biren also said that as JNIMS is the only state government-owned hospital in Manipur, the health professionals of the hospital must extend their services as a guardian to the patients and treat the patient with a human touch.

"As the situation of the prevailing pandemic is getting worse, it is high time their services are enhanced more than they have extended before. Efforts from all walks of life are needed to contain this pandemic; however, the responsibilities of doctors, nurses are the highest compared to others," he added while appealing to the health workers to think of the pandemic as war and battle like real warriors.

Speaking about the parts of the hospital that are under construction, Biren stated that the government will try its level best to improve the infrastructure of the hospital by completing the construction work in the hospital premises. He also appealed to the authority concerned to share any kind of grievances like lack of equipment, manpower etc. in the 100-bedded Dedicated COVID Block. The government will address the problem, he assured.

Referring to the demand placed by JNIMS director Th Bhimo during the function, the chief minister said that the government will consider the demands, including time-scale promotion for faculties and regular SR, increase in dearness allowance and implementation of 7th pay and release of non-salary grants.

Director, JNIMS, Th Bhimo said that 92,485 people were tested for COVID-19 at JNIMS Hospital. Of the total, 8,820 people were tested positive, he mentioned. Of the total positive cases, 1,212 are still active and being treated at COVID Ward 1 and 2 while 968 have been discharged from the hospital. And so far, 121 people have succumbed to Coronavirus infection, he said.

The director also appealed to the staff to improve their services in regards to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases both in terms of confirmed cases and mortality rate.

Till date, JNIMS has been operating a COVID ward having 145 beds. On December 2, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice Kh Nobin of the High Court of Manipur had directed the state government to submit a report on the state government policy on the setting up of a dedicated COVID-19 hospital.
