The Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced to support the chief minister’s ‘War on Drugs’, while raising concern that the state will become notorious for drug-related issues instead of being known in the world for its achievements in sports and unique culture.

State BJP vice-president Ch Chidananda Singh told the media at its state party office on Tuesday that with the coming of Biren-led 2.0 government, various steps had been taken up to completely root out drugs from Manipur.

As a part of the initiatives taken up by the present state government, the state BJP has also resolved to support the ‘war on drugs’ campaign, he said.

“In the previous years, there were only drug traffickers. However, the number of drug manufacturing units has been found to be increasing in the state at present though the state police are taking stringent actions to nab them,” he added.

The people need to become aware of the severe impacts of poppy plantation, as it not only destroys the future of youths but also gives a huge impact in ecological balance, he said. Some people with vested interests encourage poppy cultivation in some far flung areas of Manipur in the name of economic survival, he said. However, it is a crime if it affects the society, said Chidananda.

As per reports from the police department, since the previous term of N Biren Singh-led state government and during the present term, a total of around 120 kg of heroin powder had been busted; more than 1,300 kg of opium were seized and more than 14,000 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed. The BJP state unit appreciates the various village chiefs and civil society organisations for supporting the ‘War on Drugs’, he added.

He further said that on May 20, Chief Minister N Biren Singh; state BJP president A Sharda Devi; Forest Minister Th Biswajit Singh will be participating in the BJP National Executive meeting to be held at Jaipur. During the meeting, state BJP president will present a report on the achievement of the BJP-led government, said Chidananda.
