Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Salam Ulka Devi on Friday stressed that poor menstrual hygiene poses many health risks like reproductive and urinary tract infections that may cause the problems of infertility and birth complications in the future.
She was speaking as a presidium member at the one-day awareness programme organised by MSCW under the sponsorship of National Commission for Women on menstrual hygiene was held at the New Horizon Public School, Khonghampat.
Addressing the function, Salam Ulka Devi said that maintaining proper menstrual hygiene is essential for the well-being of every girl child. But due to lack of awareness, many girls and women are not following proper menstrual hygiene, she said. To fill this knowledge gap, the commission has been conducting a series of awareness programmes on menstrual hygiene such as the observance ceremony of World Menstrual Hygiene day, she added.
She further said that Manipur is considered one of the states where women are highly empowered. But on the contrary, many unwanted, heinous crimes against women have been unstoppably increasing in the state. The commission will put best level efforts in the delivery of justice in any crime committed against women, and prevent such cases from happening.
She also referred to the recent case of rape allegedly committed by founder SAINA Institute of Medical sciences. She also mentioned that the commission had taken up all necessary steps in connection with the case. The statement of the victim was already taken and the accused was summoned on August 30, she added.
The commission will always deliver the case with the ideology of ‘Justice for all and appeasement to none,’ she assured.
Other presidium members, namely MSC member Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang; MSCW member Lourembam Dayabati Devi and The New Horizon Public School founder secretary Kheroda Konsam also attended the function.
