Lone woman sitting BJP MLA Nemcha Kipgen retains Kangpokpi seat in Manipur polls 2022

BJP's Nemcha Kipgen fought against JD-U candidate Soshin Gurung in Kangpokpi constituency under Kangpokpi district in Manipur.

Nemcha Kipgen, BJP candidate and lone woman sitting MLA retained Kangpokpi seat with 14,412 votes of the 24,804 valid votes against Soshim Gurung of Janata Dal-United who got 8,974 votes, in Kangpokpi constituency under Kangpokpi district in Manipur.

Nemcha Kipgen secured 14,284 votes in EVM votes and 128 votes in Postal Ballot votes beating her nearest rival JDU Candidate Soshim Gurung with a margin of 5,308 votes as the JDU candidate secured 9,016 votes including 40 postal ballot votes.

The INC candidate of 50-Kangpokpi AC managed to secure 1376 votes, including 33 postal ballot votes.

There were 315 NOTA votes and 116 rejected votes while there were three tendered votes in 50-Kangpokpi AC.

In the 2017 Manipur Assembly elections, 47-year-old Nemcha Kipgen won the Kangpokpi seat as BJP candidate by defeating Kharga Tamang of IND by a margin of 2,297 votes which was 8.81 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency. BJP had a vote share of 51.74 per cent in 2017 in the seat.

In 2012, Nemcha Kipgen contested the same seat as MSCP candidate and won by defeating Khadga Bahadur of TMC by a margin of 443 votes which was 2.6 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency. MSCP had a vote share of 39 per cent in 2012 in the seat.

In 46-Saikul Assembly Constituency, the newly recognized political party, the Kuki Peoples' Alliance candidate Kimneo Haokip Hangshing won the election by securing 6,710 votes, including 55 postal ballot votes out of 26,333 valid votes.

Her nearest rival was Kenn Raikhan, an Independent candidate who secured 5461 votes, including 20 postal ballot votes.

Notably, BJP candidate Yamthong Haokip could only manage to secure the fifth position by securing only 2,667 votes, including 33 postal ballot votes while Independent candidate Chungkhokai Doungel and JDU candidate Ch Ajang Khongsai shared the third and fourth positions by securing 5107 votes and 4486 votes, including 31 and 40 postal ballot votes respectively.

INC candidate Lhingkim Haokip secured the sixth position with 935 votes, including 32 postal ballot votes while NPP candidate Seikholal Haokip is the seventh position holder with 645 votes including 8 postal ballot votes and RPI-A candidate Jamchinlen Lunkim secured the last spot with 322 votes including 2 postal ballot votes.

There were 103 NOTA and 137 rejected votes out of the total 26,573 votes polled.
