District Legal Services Authority, Chandel, under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, organised a one-day legal anti-drug awareness programme on “Effective Implementation of Strategies toward Eradication of Drug Menace” on Wednesday.
It was held as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign at South East Manipur Higher Secondary School, Kapaam, Chandel district.
The programme was attended by Rumeensha Ngoru, principal of South East Manipur Higher Secondary School; Jacky Lucy, Retainer Lawyer, District Legal Services Authority, Chandel and S Irananda Singh, Legal Coordinator, Legal Aid Clinic, Community Network for Empowerment (CONE) as resource persons.
Lucy briefed about the Legal Services Institutions in the state and spoke on the consequences and harmful effects of drug abuse. She also highlighted the NDPS act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985) and legal punishment for illicit trafficking and abusing of drugs causing drug menace in the state.
S Irananda Singh explained about the various types of drugs and briefed on the role of the Golden Triangle (borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar) in causing drug menace. He also stated the various steps and challenges faced by an individual in the process of abusing drugs and its effects on the individual as well as the social environment.
Babina Sanabam, Youth Coordinator (Drugs), CONE, conducted an interactive session with the students who participated in the said programme wherein, the participants were sensitized about the harmful effects of drug menace and encouraged them to avoid drug abuse.
