International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples virtually observed

The programme was participated mainly by youths from Chandel, Bishnupur, Senapati, Noney and Tamenglong, Urkhul, Imphal and Thoubal district of Manipur.

A virtual commemoration of International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples under the theme ‘Development Aggressive in Manipur: Re-Thinking Indigenous People and Development Projects’ was organised by the Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) on Monday.

The event was organised in collaboration with Centre for Research and Advocacy-Manipur, Human Rights Initiative, Youth’s Action Committee for Protection of Indigenous Peoples, Young Peoples for Social Reform, Indigenous Women Forum Manipur and Khangabok Development and Students’ Union, YFPHR stated a release issued by its president Kh Phajaton.

The programme was participated mainly by youths representing Chandel, Bishnupur, Senapati, Noney and Tamenglong, Urkhul, Imphal and Thoubal district of Manipur by giving testimony of the present impacts of the developmental projects in their respective districts, YFPHR stated.

The issues such as construction of Railway by NF Railway in Tamenglong, Imphal West and Noney, Asian High Way Road Expansion by GR Infrastructure which involve stone mining in Chandonpokpi area of Chandel district were highlighted by the participants, it stated.

Other issues such as construction of Khuga River at Churachandpur which remained defunct for many years without achieving its purpose, and the construction of Ring Road in Imphal West and its impacts as well as the proposed construction of Chakka Khongnem Dam and its possible negative impacts in Senapati district were deliberated by the participants, it added.

It mentioned that the programme observer of Secretary Centre for Research and Advocacy Jiten Yumnam also highlighted the need for youths to protect Manipur from such disastrous projects which give negative impacts.

He pointed out that no indigenous community is made to participate in any developmental projects in Manipur, and the same example could be seen in Mapithel Dam, Railway Line construction, Khuga Dam, Lok Hydro Power Corporation and others.

At the end of the programme, the participants put up slogans such as ‘No mining in Manipur’, ‘Respect rights of the indigenous peoples’, ‘Manipur is not for sale’, ‘Decommission Ithai barrage’, ‘Our land our identity’, ‘Let our river flow free’ and others, it added.
