An interaction programme as a part of the initiation of the campaign ‘Haq_humara_bhi_to_hai @ 75’ was organised by Manipur State Legal Service Authority (MASLA) at Manipur Central Jail and Sajiwa jail while a virtual interaction programme with the superintendents of the observation homes was organised on Tuesday.
The said programmes were organised as a part of the two flagship campaigns which are being carried out all over India from October 31 to November 13, as per the directions of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and under the guidance of NALSA executive chairman and Chief Justice of India (Designate) Justice DY Chandrachud, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence of our country.
The interaction programme was attended by MASLSA member secretary Ojesh Mutum; additional member secretary Bineshwori Maibam, jail officials along with the prison field team for the campaign consisting of panel lawyers and para-legal volunteers.
Similarly, for the children confined in Child Care Institutions (CCI), as a part of the campaign, District Legal Services Authorities Imphal East, Thoubal, Tamenglong, Senapati and Ukhrul also organised a virtual interaction programme with the superintendent of the observation homes under their DLSA concerned.
The DLSA secretaries interacted with the superintendents and highlighted the campaign launched by NALSA.
The campaign for persons confined in prisons focused on ascertaining that they are represented by a lawyer at the trial or for filing of appeals for bail or against conviction.
It highlighted about providing free legal counselling or services or assistance as required in a person’s case including drafting and filing of appropriate applications. It stressed on ascertaining that the person has been provided updated information regarding status of their cases and facilitate communication with lawyers.
It also mentioned about letting the prisoner in contact with family or friends, and in cases where no family/friend has been visiting, to facilitate the same either physically or virtually. It also stressed on the need to ascertain if the person is in need of any urgent medical assistance etc.
The campaign for children confined in Child Care Institutions (CCI) focused on ascertaining that the child is represented by a lawyer; the child is aware of the status of their case, and in contact with their guardians.
In connection with the nationwide campaign, MASLSA member secretary said that campaigns were launched by the executive chairman, NALSA cum Chief Justice of India (Designate) on Monday at New Delhi through virtual mode.
