Tension erupted at Tairenpokpi, Imphal West, after a CRPF personnel apprehended a man on Saturday with a license gun but failed to produce the license. At the time of his detention, the man was reportedly herding his cattle.
The man has been identified as one Ningthoujam Chinglen, 34, son of (late) N Yangei of Tairenpokpi Ching, Imphal West district.
Former Pradhan of Phayeng Gram Panchayat, Angom Gogendro, told the media at Tairenpokpi, Imphal West, on Sunday that the incident occurred on Saturday evening.
He said to control and monitor the present situation, the CRPF were patrolling in and around Tairenpokpi village when they came across Chinglen herding cattle and in possession of a license gun. And when the personnel asked him to produce the license for the gun, Chinglen could not produce it and hence, he was detained, Angom Gogendro said.
The former Pradhan, however, clarified that Chinglen carried the license gun for self-defense as there were Kuki militants on the other side of the hill and not to attack anyone.
Following the failure to produce the gun license, Chinglen was apprehended by CRPF personnel along with the gun and handed over to Lamshang Police Station. And when the information reached the area, the local Meira Paibis of the area rushed to the CRPF camp and produced the gun license, he added.
Chinglen was apprehended due to some miscommunication, Angom Gogendro said, adding that he was released from Lamshang police station on Sunday.
