A couple were arrested and opium weighing around 1.54 kg were seized from their possession by a team of Kakching district commandos at Sugnu bridge, Sugnu Churachandpur IVR road at around 2 pm Sunday, police sources said.
The arrested couple have been identified as one T Holkhomang Haokip, 37, son of Ngamdem Haokip and his wife T Hatnu Haokip ,30, of Hengshi Village, Tolbung in Chandel district, presently staying at Semol Village Churachandpur district.
Police reported that the district commando team conducted frisking and checking at Sugnu bridge in order to detect movement of anti-social elements and transportation of illegal elements.

The team was led by sub-inspector Th Robindro Brown, assisted by head constable Kh Amarjit Singh along with lady police personnel under the command of officer-in-charge, commando unit, Kakching district Kh Abash Khan, under the supervision of additional superintendent of police (Ops), Bijoy Chongtham and under the overall supervision of superintendent of police, Kakching, Shrey Vat.
During the activity, one Bolero four wheeler bearing registration number MN 01G 8414 white in colour, sticking a poster with ‘Marriage Party’ was seen coming from Serou Lamkhai side. It was driven by a male and with one female occupant.
During examination and after identification of the occupants, the police team conducted further body search. On searching the belongings of Hatnu, three plastic packets suspected to be contraband Opium weighing around 1.54 kg and one mobile phone were detected.
The couple were arrested and the items were seized on the spot by the same team. The arrested two and the seized items have been handed over to Sugnu police station for further necessary investigation.
