Husband remanded in police custody for killing wife

A 25-year-old was stabbed to death by her husband at a Phumsang in Loktak Lake on Sunday morning

A 28-year-old man who stabbed his wife to death at a Phumsang in Loktak Lake on Sunday morning has been remanded in police custody for five days after being produced before CJM Bishnupur.

The deceased has been identified as one 25-year-old Asha, daughter of (L) Heisnam Joymangol from Laphupat Tera and is survived by a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.

According to reports, H Bigyananda (Husband) and his wife lived with their son at a Phumsang in Loktak Lake on Ningthoukhong side and earned their livelihood by fishing at the lake. Their daughter was staying at her mother’s paternal home for her studies, the reports added.

According to the neighbours, they went to check the house after they heard the cry of a child and found Asha’s body covered in blood near the door of the Phumshang. The three-year-old son was found crying beside his mother’s dead body, they added.

Bigyananda was seen leaving the place on a boat towards Ningthoukhong side, as per reports.

The Territorial Army in ITI Ningthoukhong informed Bishnupur Police Station that Bigyananda had surrendered to them on the same day of the incident at around 7.20 am.

Bishnupur police took Bigyananda in their custody and investigated the Phumsang and recovered a kitchen knife and a kathi knife near the body. Post mortem has been conducted on the body at RIMS mortuary, the police said.

According to post mortem reports, there were stab marks on both sides of her neck, on her belly and her throat was slit. The body was later taken to Laphupat Tera to perform her last rites.

According to Bigyananda’s family members, he is a psychiatric patient and has been on medication for the past one year under psychiatrist Dr Gyaneshwar posted at Bishnupur District Hospital. He stopped his medications for a few days due to some inconvenience, the family members said.
