Huge cache of arms and ammunition seized from water tank in Thoubal

The weapon were seized following a disclosure from a proscribed UG group member, who was nabbed by the joint police team during a house-to-house search operation conducted at Huikap area on Sunday.

Huge arms and ammunition which were concealed in a water tank (500 litres Syntax) kept under the ground of a cowshed were recovered by a joint team of Thoubal district police on Sunday afternoon from Huikap Awang Leikai Chonga Loukol area, Thoubal district.

According to police report, the recovered weapons are one AK-81 Rifle with three magazine, one AK-86 with three magazine, one M-16 A4-UBGL (40 mm Grenade Launcher) magazine, one M-16 with one magazine, one RPG Launcher, one RPG Shell, 13 AK-56 with 13 magazine, 200 numbers of 7.62 x 39mm live rounds and 10 numbers of 5.56 mm live rounds.

The weapon were seized following a disclosure from a proscribed UG group member, who was nabbed by the joint police team during a house-to-house search operation conducted at Huikap area on Sunday afternoon, SP of Thoubal Jogeshchandra Haobijam while briefing to the media at the Thoubal SP office, Thoubal district.

He said that the cordon search operation was conducted since 11 am of Monday following an input from reliable source regarding some members of a proscribed UG group concealing huge quantity of arms and ammunition at Huikap area.

During the middle of the operation at about 1 pm, the detained UG member tried to escape on seeing the Police teams from Huikap Awang Leikai Chonga Loukol in a suspicious behaviour. Following which the police team chased and overpowered and detained him, he added. 

He was identified as Laithangbam Praffullo Singh, 43, son of L Kumar Singh of Huikap Awang Leikai, the SP revealed. The police said following his disclosure, two persons who allegedly helped him in concealing the arms and ammunition were also picked up for verification. 

They are identified as one Laitonjam Kumar Singh, 47, son of  L Madhumangol Singh of Huikap Makha Leikai and Wahengbam Tompok Singh, 49, son of late W Chambi Singh of Huikap Mayai Leikai, informed Jogeshchandra.

The persons involved in concealing the arms and ammunition were also arrested and all the three arrested individuals were handed over to Andro police station along with the recovered arms and ammunition for taking further necessary legal actions, the SP added.

Around 56 grams of brown sugar worth around Rs 11.2 lakh were apprehended by a team of Assam Rifle from a possession of an individual on November 26. It was apprehended during checking and frisking at Mobile Vehicle Check Post in Moreh, a troops of Moreh Battalion Assam Rifles from an individual who was moving suspiciously on kenbo bike, said IGAR in a release. The seized narcotics along with the drug trafficker were handed over to Moreh police station for further legal action, it added.
