House belonging to widow burnt to ashes

Due to rugged terrain, the fire service could not reach the spot in time. Everything was already burned to the ground when the fire truck finally reached the spot.

In a tragic incident, a house belonging to a 68-year-old widow was reduced to ashes in a fire at H Mongjang village, Tengnoupal district in Manipur on Sunday.

The owner of the house is one Chinkholam Haokip ,68, wife of (L) Tongkholet Haokip of H Mongjang village. The fire completely burnt down the house and all her belongings were reduced to ashes. The incident occurred around 9 am on Sunday. The widow was not at home when the fire broke out, reportedly due to an electric short circuit. Villagers fought the fire and prevented it from spreading further towards their houses.

Owner of the house Chinkholam Haokip has appealed for help from the authorities concerned. The village is located at a distance of about 18 km from Moreh town in hilly terrain. Due to rugged terrain, the fire service could not reach the spot in time. Everything was already burned to the ground when the fire truck finally reached the spot.

Speaking to the media, chief of H Mongjang village Lelet Haokip said that the fire could have been extinguished in time had there been proper road connectivity.

The road constructed under PMGSY remains unfinished even after three years, he said and appealed to the government to complete the road construction at the earliest.

Meanwhile, convenor in-charge of the Town Committee, ADC Chandel Cecilia Chinneivah Haokip visited the spot and donated Sugar, Milk Powder and one quintal Rice. Moreh police station OC Anand also extended a sum of Rs 2,000.

Members of Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) Moreh block visited the spot and extended help to the widow.
Adviser of KKL Laltinkhup Gangte donated a sum of Rs 3,000 while its advisor ND Smate donated Utensils.

Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) Moreh block rushed to the spot and donated three rice bags, four kg peas, three kg sugar, three Mosquito nets, one mat, one tarpaulin, one blanket and 12 litres of refined oil.

Meanwhile, KKL Moreh Block Lunminlal Haokip; convenor in-charge of the Town Committee, ADC Chandel Cecilia Chinneivah Haokip; chief H Mongjang village Lelet Haokip, minister Letpao Haokip; social worker Thangkholun Haokip and former chairman ADC Chandel Lhukhosei Zou have all assured to contribute and rebuild her a new house.
