The family members, local Meira Paibis and other protesters demanded the arrest of the culprit of the incident that took place on the night of June 17 in Porompat DC, Imphal East district road (near Porompat PS).

The protest was held at Athletic Brothers Association (ABA) club, Kshetri Mayai Leikai, Imphal East by the local Meira Paibi, local club members and family members with placards demanding the arrest of culprit as soon as possible. They also demanded the government to seize the Alto Car which hit the father and son.

Speaking to the media, Gram Panchayat Ward Number 7 of Kshetrigao Part-1 member Mohammad Qutub Ali said that on the night of June 17 between 10:30 PM – 11:00 PM, the deceased, identified as Mohammad Ayazuddin (60), and his son, Shahid Chisty (25), were hit by an Alto Car at the area, about 100 meters from Porompat Police Station, which sped off. Some people who were crossing the road picked them up and brought them to JNIMS. However, the father died the night itself while the son was taken to Guwahati for further treatment due to severe injury, the member said.

The Porompat PS registered an FIR with regards to the incident but it has been six days and no action has been taken up, instead the police asked the victims to check CCTV footage of the Porompat DC road, GP member Qutub said. The CCTV footage of DC, PHU and other areas on the way from Checkon to Porompat DC office road helped to identify the vehicle, he said.

Local club members, including ward members, urged the police officer, who is handling the case, to check the CCTV footage but were not paid attention, he added. So, the sit-in protest was held seeking attention of the chief minister and police officers for immediate action, Qutub said.
