It may be recalled that the Supreme Court had directed the Speaker’s Tribunal to dispose of the disqualification case of seven MLAs. However, the case remained pending at the Speaker’s Tribunal. With the Election Commission of India (ECI) notification on Rajya Sabha election, the Congress had filed seven miscellaneous writ petitions with a prayer to dispose of the disqualification cases apart from praying the court to debar them from entering the premises of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The petitions were filed by MLA K Meghanchandra against MLA Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu AC, MLA O Henry against MLA Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha, MLA DD Thaisi against MLA Y Surchandra of Kakching AC, MLA Joykishan against MLA Sanasam Bira of Kumbi AC, MLA O Surjakanta against MLA O Lukhoi of Wangoi AC and MLA K Ranjit against MLA Ginsuanhau of Singhat AC.

ECI has fixed the Rajya Sabha Election for Manipur on June 19. Three candidates from BJP, Congress and NPF had already filed nominations for the seat. However, the NPF candidate withdrew his candidature. Now Congress Candidate T Mangibabu and BJP candidate Leishemba Sanajaoba will vie for the lone seat.
