Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday said the state government has identified a location in Lamphel, Imphal West for the construction of a “Hao Market” which will consist of market sheds of at least 32 tribes of the state.

“The proposed Hao Market will set a great example of oneness and unity in diversity,” he added.

The chief minister was addressing the inaugural session of “Capacity Building Training Programme for Women Traders of 3 Ima Keithel” at Hotel Imphal in Imphal East.

It was organised by the National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi in collaboration with the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW).

Biren also stated that the women of Manipur are the model of “women led empowerment” with the good strength of women bureaucrats and Imas (elderly women) who always stood in the frontline in every aspect.

As Ima market is a big contribution to the rural economy, the government had already constructed seven Ima markets in different district headquarters which is similar to those three in Imphal, he said, adding that constructions of another four-five Ima markets in remaining district headquarters are in pipeline.

Stressing on the need to be aware about the digital world for better trading by the vendors, he said that such training programmes will be a great help to the vendors in improving their ability and accuracy in trading.

Biren also reiterated that the state government will soon introduce separate land laws for the hill areas of Manipur to solve the various issues faced during land acquisition in the hill region for construction of roads.

He lastly apprised the women vendors to take part in the training session seriously so that they can provide the knowledge and information to their fellow vendors who couldn’t take part in the training programme.

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said that women of Manipur had already proved that they are not delicate and can handle everything. Ima Markets, which is the world's largest women's market, is the example, she added.

Apprising the women traders and vendors not to limit their market only in the state, she suggested them to use the opportunity of e-market to avail the products worldwide and the use of e-payments as India is moving towards digitisation.

She said that the training programme will provide them “wings to fly” by providing knowledge of e-commerce and ways to avail loans from banks under various schemes of the government.

Such training programmes to make awareness about digital technology will also be conducted for vendors of hill regions, she added.

The training programme included three technical sessions on topics “Knowledge of relevant Banking Schemes and how to use online banking”, “Knowledge of Tax Laws / New GST Laws and Tax Compliances” and “E-Commerce Demonstration”.

As proposed by the chief minister, all the participants of the programme observed a one-minute silence showing respect to the victims of the Tupul landslide tragedy.

The event was also attended by Social Welfare Minister H Dingo; MSCW chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang; MSCW members L Dayabati and T Chuongsin Koireng; Director, Social Welfare director Ng Uttam among others.
